Meryl Ochoa

Balancing Act

Meryl Ochoa (she/they) is a multi-disciplinary artist and producer who immigrated to Canada with her family in 2012. She studied Dramatic Arts and Psychology at Brock University. She has performed and sound designed in new and devised pieces focusing on movement, mask, clown, and drama, with companies including Suitcase in Point, Carousel Players, and Unwrap Theatre. She’s also helped manage research projects in both the psychology and theatre departments, headed at Brock University and Toronto Metropolitan University, respectively.

In 2019 she co-founded Tethered the Ghost Theatre Collective out of the NEST Residency with Suitcase in Point in St. Catharines, ON. As a collective, they address the complexities of the Filipin-Canadian diaspora. In 2023, they held a workshop and two readings of the first original show, Healing Thread, which they are continuing to develop.

In 2020, Meryl completed the Empathy Squad training with Fixt Point Arts and Media and has since developed her passion for audio storytelling; she was co-Creative Facilitator of the Empathy Squad program from 2021 to 2024. In early 2024, she joined the Balancing Act team, helping deliver its Level UP! Initiative and collaborating on its knowledge mobilization efforts. Most recently, she completed Why Not Theatre and NAC’s ThisGen Fellowship, co-producing A Ritual of Return workshop by international creators Ta-Nia.

Meryl is active in event planning and community work with the Filipino-Canadian Community (FCC) in Perth-Huron, a volunteer-run non-profit based in Stratford, ON. She is lead organizer of the annual Stratford Filipino Festival. She also performs as a vocalist and guitarist in the cover band Le Pinoy for local events.

Meryl is devoted to developing work that tells untold truths and empowers those that are under-represented.
