Xiao Han is a multidisciplinary artist-curator from Wuhan, China. Based in the 6 Territory, the traditional land of Indigenous and Métis peoples, Han’s creative practice focuses on photography, lens-based performance, and community engagement. Han’s research explores diaspora identity, contemporary gender issues, and the relationship between humans, the environment, and Indigenous lands. Through visual art and curatorial practice, Han has produced numerous projects investigating Chinese-Canadian restaurant history, and the aesthetics of community relationships. Concerns about having a child previously influenced Han’s thoughts on continuing her artistic creativity. As a mother of a young child, Han has worked throughout her entire pregnancy with support from the community, cohort, collective partners, and family. Through her experience of motherhood, Han has realized the importance of raising awareness through visual art, writing, and conferences to present the often untold—yet common—experiences of artists as caregivers with children to the public.
