My context of caregiving is often unseen and isolating, where my creative endeavours take a backseat or are pretty nonexistent. This is a bright spot and source of encouragement to stay the creative course

About BIPOC TV & Film

Location: Ontario
Artistic Discipline: TV & Film
Operating Budget: Less than $100,000

For over a decade, BIPOC TV & Film has worked tirelessly to build, fortify, and empower a growing community of Indigenous, Black, and Racialized screen media artists, creators, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Through ongoing community and industry engagement, BIPOC TV & Film challenges structural and systemic barriers in the screen media sector that prevent the narrative freedom and economic sustainability of Indigenous, Black and Racialized professionals, inspiring a hopeful and more accessible future for the industry.

BIPOC TV & Film’s Level UP! Project

BIPOC TV & Film launched a pilot Caregiver Microgrant Program to support BIPOC creatives in the screen industry who are caregivers—or who require caregiving support themselves. The initiative offered $100 microgrants to help recipients carve out time for creative work, with funds used toward expenses like childcare, transportation, food, and rent. In total, 17 BIPOC creatives and two staff members received support, with projects ranging from writing and editing to research and development. The program highlighted caregiving as an often-invisible barrier to participation in creative industries and introduced many new creatives to the organization.

Project Highlights:

    • A social media post about the grant initiative inspired a follower to donate, which allowed five additional BIPOC creatives to receive support.
    • Program messaging clearly communicated that the funds could support both caregivers in the industry and creatives who require care themselves.
    • Looking ahead, BIPOC TV & Film hopes to expand the program by adding a career coaching or mentorship component, as well as a peer group meeting to foster connection and community among participants.
