There are artist mothers who feel like they need to keep their motherhood a secret because they think it’s going to be viewed perhaps negatively, as like some kind of risk to your career. Often we do feel isolated in this journey of caregiving as an artist.

About CADA/East

Location: Eastern Canada
Artistic Discipline: Dance
Operating Budget: Less than $100,000

In 1986, responding to developing federal and provincial arts policies, a small group of Ontario-based dance artists saw the need for a professional association that could establish standards for payment and working conditions and that would organize individual dance artists into one united voice. With the support of the Dance Ontario Association, Marie-Josée Chartier, Maxine Heppner, Patricia Fraser and others, the foundation was laid for what is now the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists – East Chapter (CADA/East).

Today, CADA/East assists dance artists in navigating the professional dance field, while working to foster greater sustainability, equity, and professional well-being throughout artistic communities.

CADA/East’s Level UP! Project

CADA/East wanted to address the need for greater support for caregiver dance artists. In 2022, CADA/East launched their Caregiver Subsidy Pilot Program, which offered funding to support caregiving needs for their membership of over 200 dance artists. Valerie Calam, Membership Coordinator and also a caregiver, played a vital role on this project and was instrumental in keeping the program running. Since the pilot, CADA/East has added a line in their annual budget dedicated to caregiver subsidies and continues to offer the program.

Project Highlights:

    • Offered CADA/East members up to $100/month ($350 total per member) from the program in the form of reimbursements for caregiving costs
    • Included eligible expenses incurred during training, rehearsals, and performances, and doing administrative work eg. working on grant applications
