The conversations this initiative raised were important and we plan to continue integrating them into strategic planning of the organization. We’d like to continue having logistical conversations with peer organizations to normalize flexibility and providing a resourceful working environment to contractors.

About Tara Cheyenne Performance

Location: British Columbia
Artistic Discipline:Dance, Theatre, Comedy
Operating Budget: $100,000 to $1,000,000

Since 2007, Tara Cheyenne Performance (TCP) has been creating kinetic theatrical expressions through exquisitely realized characters, crafted choreography, a healthy dose of comedy, and lashings of tragedy. Bridging the divide between dance and theatre, the company is known for its humour, pathos, and cultural relevance. TCP is a leader in community engagement, audience and artist development, offering workshops, discussions, and mentorship. The company has been presented in Vancouver by The Cultch, The Firehall, The Dance Centre, The Shadbolt Centre, among others, and have toured extensively throughout BC. Artistic Director Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg’s choreography is a staple of the Arts Club Theatre Company, Bard on the Beach, and PuSH Festival. Tara mentors in programs including the Riotous Youth, Simon Fraser University Contemporary Dance, Modus Operandi, The Shoe Project, and our Startle Reflex residency program.

Tara Cheyenne Performance’s Level UP! Project

As a company with a longstanding commitment to accessibility and inclusion—through supports such as shorter workdays, childcare stipends, touring assistance, and more—TCP has formalized a policy enabling employees and contracted artists to request flexible work arrangements and caregiver support. This project was led by Hannah Meyers, General Manager of TCP, and supported by Artistic Director Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg.

Project Highlights:

    • Working through language and legalese, specifically “accommodation” and “support” and the legal difference between the two.
    • Ensuring the fund was appropriately and consistently recorded in financial statements and CADAC records as internally restricted.
