About Why Not Theatre

Location: Ontario
Artistic Discipline: Theatre
Operating Budget: More than $1,000,000

Our vision is a world with limitless possibilities for all. Our mission is to make things better through art. To reinvent how stories are told to inspire new ways of thinking about creativity and civic engagement.

We push. Never settle. Question everything. Rethink how stories are told. And who gets to tell them. We believe in art. It’s how we make change. It’s how we create the world we want to see.

We bring it. We dream, share, and take risks. To create a world where art plays an essential role in the lives of all people. Where everyone is welcome. Everyone has a voice. Everyone can realize their full potential.

We make things, better.

Why Not Theatre’s Level UP! Project

During the 2021–2022 season, Why Not Theatre developed a company-wide Caregiver Support Policy, led by Kelly Read, Executive Director at the time, in consultation with the Level UP! Cohort, HR Arts Consultant Jeanne LeSage, Why Not artists and board.

Project Highlights:

    • The policy was designed for all employees, including full-time, part-time, temporary, casual, and contract staff, as well as volunteers, students, interns, and apprentices
    • The policy outlines the types of supports offered to artist-caregivers, ensuring that they can pursue their work with as few barriers as possible
    • The policy was designed to account for the ebb and flow of various projects, resources, and worker needs
