The Art of Care
Celebrating the artists and impact of Balancing Act
Welcome to Balancing Act Canada!
We are a national arts service organization dedicated to increasing equality, access to employment, and artistic opportunities for mothers, parents and caregivers in the arts sector in Canada.
Balancing Act was founded in 2019 by Theatre Direct Executive Artistic Director, Lisa Marie DiLiberto.
Supporting Parents and Caregivers in the Arts
Parents and caregivers face significant structural barriers working in the arts industry: gig-based work, low wages, inflexible schedules and late hours, constant travel, and persistent stigma. These barriers are disproportionately faced by women and gender-diverse artists and contribute to workforce attrition, lost productivity, and inequitable access to opportunity.
Our work illustrates how care infrastructure functions as economic infrastructure, and how with proper support, parents and caregivers can thrive in their artistic careers. We are thrilled to showcase our work and the work of our partners through the Level UP! Initiative and Level UP! Sector Expansion in exploring care-centred strategies in the workplace.

Jump to the Reception section for full event details.
Our work with Balancing Act will give artists the courage to believe that having a career in the performing arts and having a family is an attainable dream, knowing that they will be supported and encouraged instead of shut out and looked over. But let us not fool ourselves: caregivers are not the only ones who will benefit from this revolution. The art form itself will be richer by the creativity these artists will bring, most of whom are at the height of their careers as they become parents.
Level UP! Initiative
Through the generous funding to Theatre Direct of Women and Gender Equality Canada, our Level UP! Initiative invests in artists, collectives and organizations as they pilot strategies to develop inclusive, care-led workplace policies and practices. Level UP! offers financial support, consultation, and evaluation as partners explore the implementation of supportive measures for artists and arts workers who are parents and caregivers.
Level UP! Sector Expansion
From 2021 to 2024, we engaged partners in the Performing Arts from coast to coast to coast. By 2024, with additional support from Women and Gender Equality Canada, we expanded to engage partners in Music, Visual Arts, and Screen-based Media, alongside our continued work in the Performing Arts.
The Level UP! Initiative and Level UP! Sector Expansion are projects supported by Women and Gender Equality Canada.
Balancing Act is also supported by strategic funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.
We also acknowledge the incredible support of our Indigenous Arts Consultant, Cynthia Lickers-Sage, Executive Director of Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance,

Intertwine Series
“My creative practice pulls from the quiet moments in women’s lives where seemingly nothing (and everything) occurs. I am interested in the complex emotions that underlie these mundane points in time. Themes of vulnerability, transformation, memory, and community are explored within my practice as I examine daily life and my rituals within it.
During my early years of mothering, I developed the Intertwine series (2015, laser cut wood) in response to the physicality of caregiving. Using personal photographs as source material, I minimized the scenes into line drawings of blended child-parent bodies. The resulting pieces reflect on everyday moments of play, care, and exasperation.”
Jennifer participated in Level UP! Sector Expansion in 2024-2025 with a project that was in collaboration with artist Shea Proulx and Gallery@501 in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The initiative centred on Sustaining & Growing: Artist-Parents in Conversation—a relaxed, child-inclusive community engagement session designed to explore sustainable creative strategies for artist-parents and caregivers.
